Earlier this year, I headed out to capture the sunrise at nearby Red Rock Canyon. I knew a storm front was moving in, and after hiking to reach this spot, it looked as though it might be a day without photos. Right at sunrise, the sun peeked through a tiny slice of an opening in the clouds. This lasted for about a minute, and the not-so-distant cliffs in the background (which I had hoped to capture that morning) never fully saw the sun.

A great photo! RRC is so moody in the cooler months. The clouds moving through the Canyon seem to hug the mountains as they drift slowly past…

Thanks, John! Yes, the clouds were laying low that morning, making for a moody day. This usually happens in the cooler months, and when it happens in summer, that means the road is probably closed!

Wow this makes an amazing contrast, with the peaks looking mysterious

Thank you, Abrie. To expose properly for that intense sunlight, everything else seemed to fade to black. No post-processing needed to get that look.
