For this week’s challenge of Dance, I almost took the easy route with photos of people dancing, but then remembered the operative word is challenge. You’ll probably enjoy these a bit more, anyway. I know I do.
For anyone who has ever witnessed a slow lava flow, you know there is a pulse that surges, as the cool air solidifies the flow, while the warm undercurrent wants to keep moving. The final cooled result (above) reflects that pulse, and was taken in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
Flowing, tumbling water can also have a rhythmic feel to it. The sunlight was being filtered through the forest, and accentuated most of the current in this shot of Oak Creek, near Sedona, Arizona.
Clouds can portray a feeling of choreography, even in a still capture. My favorite example is this thunderstorm at sunset near Cloudcroft, New Mexico.
Finally, rock art symbols almost always have a sense of dance and celebration, indicating how important this was in ancient culture. This panel of rock art is in the Grand Canyon.

Wow, I love the lava! At first I thought it was tree bark or a close up of elephant skin. I like your explanation. I hope to see that firsthand one day. All these are great shots.

I can see how the lava might appear as tree bark or elephant skin, so I thought that photo might need an explanation. It is something beyond words to witness a volcanic eruption or lava flow, and the eruptions in Hawaii have been active (just not on a daily basis) for some time now. I hope you get that chance soon. Thank you, Cynthia!

I didn’t think I needed another reason to go to Hawaii, but thanks for providing one more! 🙂

Wonderful responses to the dance challenge, Steve. Each one has so much to offer. The first looks like elephant skin. The mammatus clouds in NM are an excellent capture of a rare event – beautiful.

Thank you, Eliza! I knew I was going to have to put the story behind that first one, but then a photo of elephant skin would probably have fit here too…if I had one!

Dancing lines… Synonymous with: curving lines, reciprocating lines, symmetrical lines, soft lines, flowing energy, happy energy, light energy…Lovely and addictive theme, it can be profoundly appreciated as long as we are focused and dedicated in dancing to the music inside of us…Life is Good! Namaste…<3

Nature is always in motion. Just because we can’t hear it’s music doesn’t mean the elements aren’t dancing. If we are in tune with nature, we should also be in tune with the music in us, and the dancing should come naturally. 🙂
