A few years ago while I was in San Francisco, I was walking along the bay and the piers. I liked the contrast of this older style paddleboat against the city skyline. I knew I had to work it in b&w to convey this contrast and get the feel I wanted for this shot. The reality is that this boat is not very old and is very much in use today.

Waves and foam in the sky and stars in the water. Almost feels like a moment from Pirates of the Caribbean – where the world is upside down!

Such an interesting shot, Steve. The boat and city skyline seem incongruous wedged between the sparkling water and clouds in the sky, almost like a composite. There may be some profound message here about man and nature that is just beyond me! ;-D

All one shot – no composite here. I had a beautiful sky and sun sparkling on the water, but the color original was too flat. I liked that the buildings showed a sense of scale and place, yet remain as a generic backdrop for the boat. After I got the contrast where I wanted it, the boat remained a little flat, so I brought up the exposure through the dodging brush. No intended message in this shot, just a vintage-style paddleboat in a modern city with nature’s highlights. Thank you for your comments, Eliza. 🙂
