For this week’s Daily Post Challenge of Atop, I have a photo from my trip to New Orleans a couple months ago. The Robert E. Lee Monument is a massive column with a small (by comparison) statue of General Lee atop.
Although this monument is on the National Register of Historic Places, there is a real possibility of it being taken down. In an effort to rid America of all things associated with the South, this statue has been involved in court cases during the last couple years. Will this eradicate racism? No. What can be put up in its place that will not offend people now or in another hundred years? Perhaps a Big Mac and an order of fries?

Good point. Sign of the times, I guess.

Thanks, Eliza. Our country doesn’t have a perfect track record, but removing this monument solves nothing. Instead, by keeping the statue in place, it may serve as a better reminder that we are a country divided, no longer by North and South, but by so many other issues.

Sadly true, though I wish it wasn’t so. Our only hope is education and listening/dialogue.

Yes, education is the only road to understanding and learning from each other.

Yes, I’ve seen the news reports, Ray. It has to be strange looking at that pillar by itself.

All I know is that I need some gravel for the potholes on my street. Grind ’em up, I say.

I saw some of your roads last year. I think you need a few more pillars to grind.

Or, axes. 😂 There $3.7 billion in FEMA funds earmarked for our streets. Our neighborhood is scheduled to be repaired in 2039. Meanwhile, we use Mardi Gras beads to fill the holes.

In 22 years, I think all those potholes will grow and become one giant depression in the road. That will be their excuse to say there’s not a pothole problem.
Additionally, I don’t know how our government can plan funding that far out when they have such a difficult time with an annual budget.

The money was already distributed. The mayor convinced FEMA that our streets are the result of flooding caused by the levee failure after Katrina. Unfortunately, there are only so many construction companies. And, so many blocked roads we can take at one time.
