Hey, perfect timing Daily Post. I think this post fits the challenge.
With the 4th of July falling on a Monday this year, the fireworks displays were stretched out over three days in Las Vegas. Last year I was able to watch two displays from my vantage point, with those from the Stratosphere being further away. I remember there were some interesting patterns to that display, but were intended for a different viewing angle. I didn’t attend any fireworks on Saturday, but I did make it to the Stratosphere for Sunday night’s show. Although it was nice being that close, it wasn’t as good as I was hoping for from a photography standpoint, with many images being similar.
That left Monday night, and a return to last year’s vantage point. After the Stratosphere letdown, I wanted to make sure I got some images that were different from the previous year, and unique overall. The ‘tails’ were prominent again this year, so I spent a lot of time trying to avoid those, and just getting the burst of the explosions. No easy task. All my exposures were on Bulb setting using a cable release. The display seemed to start a little earlier this year, and the lingering daylight made for some nice shots.
I never thought of shooting fireworks purely as artwork before, but think I succeeded with the top image (looking like a flower), and this one.
Although I did get some similar shots to the previous year, I was very happy with my results this year.
The grand finale was no letdown, and this was my last shot of the night. Even though I was on Bulb setting, this was less than a 1 second exposure. That’s a lot going on for 1 second.

Yes, with so much going on, I found that it was all about the timing. Thank you, Allan!

Thank you Bella! I thought about doing a write-up for my recent camera upgrade, but I have some lenses that are 30 years old that are ridiculously sharp and helping for shots like these.

Hi Steve, You are welcome. I am not a photographer at all. I can’t take the simplest of pictures. The pics are beautiful, and when you have the right equipment and skill -the result is beautiful.

Great photos, well done! Drove by the Stratosphere earlier today, always impressive.

I remember when they first conceived the idea for the tower and wanted to take it higher. At over 1100′, you’re right – it’s still very impressive. Knowing that puts the grand finale shot in perspective. Thank you, John!

Thank you, Leya! While there were many traditional bursts, I was very happy to see and be able to capture the more unusual ones. 🙂

They remind me of my visit to this “Rotten city” last year. Unfortunately no fireworks then. Wonderful photos!

Rotten city? Many of us happen to like it here. Were you shuttled around on one of those bus tours?

I didn’t intend to offend you. It’s how it’s called in “the literature” 😉 We came to Las Vegas only to have a sleep there and then go further to the National Parks.

I’ve heard of Vegas being called a lot of things, but not that one. Not offended, just curious if your stay here was not a good experience. Hope you make it back again someday, and be lucky enough to see more of Vegas and nearby natural areas. 🙂

I’m not a fun of big sities. I went to New York for a few hours ’cause that is “the centre of the world” and wanted to see this giant with my own eyes. Yet for me it’s too big, too crowded, no light, so much rush. This one visit was enough. I travelled to USA mostly to see your incredible nature: vast spaces, unlimited sky, unbracable mountains. I’m still stunned by it. I couldn’t find it anywhere in Europe. That is your great treasure 😉

I don’t think I have enough images to fill a book yet. Maybe I’ll try again on New Year’s Eve. I do know they will all print nicely. Thank you, Sue!

The large vertical image of the Stratosphere, toward the top of the post, says just about all you need to know. Good job.

Thanks, Ray. The Stratosphere is by far the tallest thing on the Vegas skyline, yet from that close it gets compressed, and seems smaller.

I stayed there once when I was on assignment. I needed the height and wanted as much access as possible. At the time, the rooms were kind of dumpy.

I’m sure the building suited your needs for height, but I don’t think they’ve ever been known for 5 star accommodations! 🙂
