This week’s challenge of Landscape should have been a no-brainer, with the only dilemma being which one? A glance through my blog will reveal many shots of the nearby desert, but there are a couple places in the US that I love to photograph which are miles away from here. The state of South Dakota, in particular the Black Hills and Badlands National Park, would be near the top of that list.
A few years back, my work was in a gallery where the owner was interested in testing out new images. Unfortunately, this was in a town with many golf courses nearby, and after a couple weeks, he took this one down because people kept commenting, “What a great place that would be to put a golf course”. Hopefully, the blogging community will appreciate this one more than the golfers!

I have several shots that I really like from Badlands NP, but this was always the favorite. Thank you, Lena!

Golfers must have one-track minds. This is really beautiful, Steve!

Fortunately, park status protects it from being developed into a golf course. Thank you, Eliza. 🙂

This is a beautiful park, and an easy place to wander around with a camera for a couple days. Thank you, Janet!

That would be my illustration for “rugged landscape.” Beautiful!

Very rugged, indeed! That last ridge is called the Badlands Wall, and I’m not sure how well its scale comes across without a reference object. Thank you, Carolyn!

Never heard of the Black Hills and Badlands National Park. But now I know! Pretty cool shot you got! Since it is a NP, it’ll go on my #bucketlist!!! Well, it is only one of 58 of them!!!

Badlands National Park is to the east of Rapid City, SD, and the Black Hills (home to Mount Rushmore) are just to the west of Rapid City. If you went to one, I think it would almost be a crime to not visit the other. Hope that clarifies things, and Thank You!

Thank you, Nadia! While the desert has its own color variations, I enjoy being places where it rains consistently.

This picture takes my breath away. The palpable texture, the “tridimensional” look, the mauve rock landscape against the lime green, and the background landscape against the clouds…Oh so beautiful! Wow!

The angle and intensity of the sun was perfect for distinguishing the elements. And while the Badlands hills look as dry as anything in the southwest deserts, the interspersed flat areas hold water and vegetation, making for a beautiful contrast. Thank you!
